Duels: the fight system where knowing your fandom is your attack
Duels are coming to FanBoosters. Your five strongest cards of a universe face five opponents, and every hit depends on answering a question about the opposing card, fast.
Most card games ask you to learn their rules. Duels ask you to know your fandom. Your cards bring the numbers; your knowledge decides how hard they hit.
Your team, their team
A duel takes place in one universe. Your team is your five strongest cards of that universe, picked for you by their power (ATK plus DEF), strongest in front. Across the table stand five cards of the same universe, chosen to be close to your team's strength: a fresh binder meets fair opponents, and a stacked one meets a real fight.
Every fighter has hit points equal to twice its DEF, so a card usually takes two or three good hits to fall. The two front cards face each other; when one falls, the next steps up.
Every attack is a question
To attack, you answer a multiple-choice question about the opposing card: its faction, its species, its weapon, its home, its family. Four options, one right answer, and about eight seconds on the clock: long enough to read, too short to look it up.
- Right and fast (in the first 40% of the time): a critical hit, one and a half times your front card's ATK.
- Right: a full hit, your card's ATK.
- Wrong: a scratch, about a third of it.
- Out of time: nothing at all.
Then the opposing card hits back, at half its ATK, whatever you answered. Knowledge beats stats: a player who knows the universe cold can topple a team stronger than their own.
Where the questions come from
Each card gets a small bank of questions written from that card's own data, the facts and description it was forged from, which come from its wiki page (see how a wiki page becomes a card). The questions are meant to be very easy for fans: no dates, no episode numbers, nothing that needs memorising a figure, and never a question the card's name or art gives away. The wrong options are real names from the same universe, so guessing is not free.
The questions are generated with the help of an AI model, which is only allowed to use the card's data, and every question is checked before it reaches the bank: well formed, four distinct options, and an answer that does not leak into the question. A duel never asks you the same question twice.
A fair clock
As everywhere in FanBoosters, the server is the referee. It picks both teams, chooses the question, starts the clock, and judges your answer against its own time, with a little grace for a slow connection. The browser only shows the countdown. The answer never reaches your browser before you have answered.
Rewards
A duel pays in coins, the same coins you use on the market. A victory is worth far more than a defeat, and every right answer adds to the reward, win or lose: even a lost duel pays something for what you knew. Streaks of right answers are tracked too.
Why a quiz, and not just stats?
Because the heart of FanBoosters is the fandom, not the gacha. A duel should feel like arguing about your favourite series with a friend who is almost as obsessed as you are. And a wrong answer is a reason to open the card's wiki page and find out why, which is exactly what we want the game to do.
Until duels land, the best preparation is simple: build your team. Your strongest cards of a universe will be your fighters. Questions? See the FAQ on duels.
